H&S Updates, HR Updates

City News November 2011

Welcome to the November issue of City News. This month’s issue is packed with useful information and topical articles, from the furore that’s emerged over the wearing of poppies both on and off the football pitch, to what to do in the event of the early winter that we’re predicted, not to mention Anti-Bullying Week 2011.

Just as bullying occurs in schools, it can also be a factor in the workplace with employee grievances resulting from bullying, harassment or discrimination having increased significantly in recent times. Bullying at work is often an expression of power designed to intimidate junior staff and it is recognised as a major contributor to stress and stress-related illness.

This year’s campaign is particularly focused on handling verbal bullying with the slogan ‘Stop and think – words can hurt’ and through this year’s theme the aim is to challenge the use of derogatory language and raise awareness of the consequences of using demeaning or harassing language through technology.

In line with Anti-Bullying Week 2011, Park City will be delivering a ‘Preventing Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination’ Management Skills Training Course on Friday 18 November 2011. This seminar will provide delegates with information on what constitutes bullying, harassment and discrimination in the workplace, how to identify it and importantly, how to prevent it. It will also cover what to do if you are faced with a case and how to manage this using the grievance process.

I hope you have a successful month.
