Colin Ashby
Colin Ashby was educated at Sir Thomas Rich’s Grammar School before reading Chemistry at Birmingham University. He studied for his PGCE at Oxford University where he gained his rugby Blue in 1973. His first teaching post was at Epsom College during which time he and his wife, Patricia, ran a girls’ boarding house.
After two years at Bromsgrove School as Second Chemist, he spent 8 years as boarding Housemaster of Elmshurst. Colin became Headmaster of Trinity School, Teignmouth from 1992 to 2008, during which time the School has expanded massively from 220 pupils to over 650, accepting pupils over the full age range from 3 months to 19 years. Trinity was the first accredited independent school in Devon and Cornwall to win the Investors in People Award and became one of the top 2% of schools nationally in terms of value-added with students competing nationally in fencing, tennis, athletics, swimming and squash.
Colin took up the Chairmanship of the Independent Schools Association (ISA) in 20005 and he has served as a Vice-President of ISA since 2008. He is currently a Team Leader and Assistant Principal Examiner for Edexcel Pearson for advanced level chemistry. Since 2008, he has worked as a Consultant for 18 independent Schools and is an Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) Inspector. As a former rugby player for Richmond and Surrey, Colin’s pastimes and interests include swimming, cycling, music and travel. He has visited 26 countries including 16 Caribbean islands. In 2008 he became a Paul Harris Fellow ‘in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world’. Colin continues to enjoy working with and empowering people at all levels, to create dynamic and successful environments, which lead to the fulfilment of human potential.
