Eighteen male caretakers and maintenance workers who lodged a claim with an employment tribunal this year have been awarded £460,000 in pay back for being paid less than their female colleagues.
Each of the eighteen men have received between £27,000 – £31,000 which covers back pay for 6 years’ service including pension entitlement. In addition they will also receive an increase to their annual salary of around £4,000 extra a year.
The university where the men work stated that the difference in salary was not due to gender but instead due to changes to the men’s contracts, and a result of being transferred from a different university under a TUPE transfer.
Since the tribunal 13 more employees in various positions have come forward with similar claims.
