On Monday 9th February, the Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, the Secretary of State for Transport, will visit Colchester to meet with local business and political leaders to discuss plans for the improvement of the A120.
The Secretary of State for Transport’s visit is the latest development of a political campaign that began in May 2014 in its current phase, but has been an ongoing issue for many years. In recent months, the campaign has been focussed on bringing together business leaders from the region to show to the government the urgent need for the A120 to be improved. Over 100 businesses came together in December 2014 at the Marks Tey Hotel, at the invitation of the Haven Gateway Partnership, to voice their support for the campaign.
George Kieffer, Chairman of the Haven Gateway Partnership, said:
“We’re delighted that the Secretary of State has agreed to meet with us to discuss the A120. The road, which links Stansted to Harwich, has long been ignored. With improvement, we could bring an extra £1.3bn in economic growth to our region, whilst also vastly improving journey times. And we are reminded all too often how dangerous a road it is. We will be keen to make those points to the Secretary of State and whether he will be willing to fund the feasibility study we have long been campaigning for. Essex County Council Highways have committed £5 million towards completing the route alignment studies and we look to the Secretary of State to match that commitment and ensure implementation of the conclusions proceeds at pace.”
