The Cost of Injury and Ill Health at Work

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has released new figures which show that injury and ill health caused by work costs us a staggering £14.3 billion a year.

Despite Britain being one of the safest countries when it comes to workplace health & safety, some of the key 2014/15 statistics make for surprising reading:

• 1.2 million people suffered from  work-related illness

• 142 fatalities at work

• 76,000 employee injuries reported under RIDDOR

• 611,000 self-reported workplace injuries

• 23.3 million days were lost due to work-related ill health and 4.1 million due to workplace injury

• £14.3 billion was the cost of injuries and new cases of ill health

• 586 cases were prosecuted by HSE in England and Wales

• 12,430 notices were issued by HSE and local authorities
