The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has released new figures which show that injury and ill health caused by work costs us a staggering £14.3 billion a year.
Despite Britain being one of the safest countries when it comes to workplace health & safety, some of the key 2014/15 statistics make for surprising reading:
1.2 million people suffered from work-related illness
142 fatalities at work
76,000 employee injuries reported under RIDDOR
611,000 self-reported workplace injuries
23.3 million days were lost due to work-related ill health and 4.1 million due to workplace injury
£14.3 billion was the cost of injuries and new cases of ill health
586 cases were prosecuted by HSE in England and Wales
12,430 notices were issued by HSE and local authorities
The good news is that health & safety at work continues to improve year on year, with employers recognising their legal and moral obligations along with the HSE coming down hard on anyone who is found to be in breach of the law.
